Discovering The Famous Banff Hot Baths: A Chronological History Of Banff Famous Hot Pools
During the autumn of 1883, several Canadian Pacific Railway construction employees discovered a cave containing hot springs. The cave was located on the eastern part of the Canadian Rockies in what is currently known as Banff Alberta.
Due to the discovery of these hot pools was conceived Banff National Park, Canada's foremost national park and the world's third. Spanning 6,641 square kilometers (2,564 square miles) of valleys, lush hinterland, glaciers, wilderness, meadows and crystal clean waters, Banff National Park is one of the world's superior travel spots.
The Banff Hot Springs are situated in a tranquil location south of the center of Banff.
Prior to the 1880s, Canada's aboriginals were the among the first to use Banff's hot mineral waters. For the aboriginal people, these were healing waters. The aboriginal people used the mineral waters as a place to cure illness and maintain health.
In 1884, the first Europeans visited the hot mineral waters and by 1886, the start of construction of the very first wood bath house was underway. This bath house was also later called the Grand View Hotel. The earliest tourists arrived by train and it wasn't til 1915 that a street was provided and the initial vehicle owners showed up at the hot springs.
By the 1930s, The Canadian government acquired the lease for Banff's hot spring property and began updating and fixing the hot pools and bath house.
In 1932, the hot pools bath house opened up and it was equipped with sulphur water luxurious pool, plunge baths, steam rooms, tubs, showers and dressing rooms. The bath house and swimming pool had been built in a design which could compete with the well-known health spas of Europe.
By 1961, it was necessary to reconstruct and fix up the swimming pool and the internal areas of the bath house, simply because they were outdated.
Once again, in 1995, the Banff Hot Springs ended up being restored and this time the building was reconditioned to its 1932 visual appeal. The reconditioned bath house unveiled in August 1996 with a brand new health spa, bistro, gift and gourmet coffee shop.
