Strumming The Guitar: Some Useful Tips That Will Help You
So you have got your guitar, what do you do now? Wave your plectrum on the strings like you've seen on the Television and hope that a tune comes out? Well that's certainly one method to do it, but you'll find yourself going through the trial & error process for much longer than actually learning how to strum a guitar.
Strumming is all about "Rhythm". It is a structured practice that permits you to have total control over whichever hand you use to strum with. Although the hand you'll use for chords, riffs, etc has what seems to be a more challenging job, none of the correct sounds or rhythm will be there unless you can strum with accuracy.
Some people have the ability to choose this up easily, others need to work at it which is what I'm here to aid with - some simple strategies that will help you build rhythm and get you more relaxed when it comes to playing.
First of all, don't worry about the hand you use on the guitar neck, let all the strings resonate freely, now count at a continuous pace in your head, 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4 etc. When you are then comfortable with the rhythm start to strum down on all of the strings on every number, 1, 2, 3, 4, down, down, down, down. You'll discover that as you progress in the world of guitar that many songs strum from the A (second string), so this will be the next lesson. Do exactly the same strumming but from the A string down (don't hit the 1st String E). It will help you create precision. If you are happy with that you can proceed to just strumming the D (3rd String) down. You don't actually need to go onto any other strings for now.
To add to this routine, as I am sure your bored of strumming down all the time, is to now strum up on the even numbers, almost creating a marching beat: 1 (Down), 2 (Up), 3 (Down), 4 (Up).
If you're having problems keeping the rhythm of the beat then I would suggest a Metronome to keep pace, you can also change the pace to fit your needs. In which case I would truly recommend you check out the Jamorama package as this comes with one absolutely free with their package with a lot of other tips, tricks and content which will really start you down the correct path.
